I just hacked together two pieces of script automates the adjustment of the size of the screen to external monitors (or back to the built in display, if no monitors are plugged in). This all works well, and I have bind two keys (Alt-F6, and Alt-F7) for the switch to a beamer (1024x768) and to my monitor at work (using an optimised modline).

However, this could all be handled by a polling script that runs at all times and checks the VGA-port for changes. However, having extra processes running all the time seems like a waste of CPU.
